Massena holds off FA; Potsdam boys fall to OFA


The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team relayed a 15-point halftime lead into a 64-57 win on the road over Franklin Academy while Potsdam Central dropped a 98-39 decision to host OFA in the two NAC Central Division matchups staged on Tuesday.

Another game pitting Gouverneur against Canton at the SUNY Canton fieldhouse was postponed.

Massena 64, FA 57: In Malone, the visiting Raiders jumped out to a 17-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and went into halftime ahead 33-18 before going on to raise their Central Division record to 6-0.

Freshman Dante Viskovich stepped up to anchor a balanced Massena offense with a game-high 20 points, including three three-pointers. Senior Xavier Viskovich chipped in 12 points followed by Bailey LaBarge with eight and Tyler Haas with six. Logan Deshane and Zevon Viskovich contributed six points each while Rhoades Tarbell and Rory Corcoran rounded out the Raider scoring with four and two points respectively.

For the Huskies (8-2, 4-2), Alex Johnson tossed through 13 points followed by Camron Gallagher with 10 while Kody Mulverhill and Chris Poupore each finished with eight.

Massena also won the JV game.

The Raiders, now 8-1 overall, will now get set to host OFA this Thursday in a mid-season matchup of Central Division unbeatens starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.

OFA 98, Potsdam 39: On a night when Potsdam-area sports radio broadcasting pioneer Con Elliott was honored at midcourt before the opening tip-off, the Blue Devils took quick control and never let up in downing the Sandstoners.

Kinnon LaRose fired through a game-high 32 points, including five three-pointers, as the Blue Devils (9-1, 5-0) raced out to a 28-9 lead by the end of the first quarter then pushed the margin to 58-13 at halftime. Matt Piercey tossed through another 23 points followed by Collin Ross with 11 and Conor Hannond with nine.

Nick Vaccaro led the Potsdam offense with 13 points, including a trio of threes. Matt Stone and Ethan VanBlommenstein added seven points each followed by Jack Byrnes with four and Brian Cole with three. Travis Stephenson and Connor Prosper finished with two points each while Garrett Mattimore tallied a free throw.

The Sandstoners (4-5, 3-3) are scheduled to host Gouverneur on Thursday starting with the JV contest at 5:30 p.m.
