SUNY Canton men’s basketball downs Cazenovia for first win

CAZENOVIA - The SUNY Canton men’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season, 84-71, against host Cazenovia College on Thursday behind a season-high 27 points from Sam Annorh (Queens, NY).

Annorh tied his previous season-high against Albany College of Pharmacy. He shot 5-for-8 from downtown and 10-for-12 from the season to go with his seven rebounds, five assists and game-high five steals. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) recorded 15 points and six rebounds, while Tyler Ellison (New York, NY) earned his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists hitting on three treys.

The game was back-and-forth early but the hosts used an 8-2 spurt to open up its largest lead of the game at 36-23 with 6:32 left in the first half. SUNY Canton (1-8) closed the half on an 11-4 run to get within 43-38 at intermission.

After tying the contest twice in the opening minutes of the second stanza the Roos took their first lead of the half, 52-51, after a pair of Ellison hits from the free throw line. Cazenovia (3-7) opened up a three-point lead, but SUNY Canton used a key 10-0 run midway through the half to open up an eight-point edge at 68-60. Four different Roos made field goals on the spurt. The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to as little as four but SUNY Canton responded with terrific play in key moments down the stretch to prevail, 84-71.

The Roos shot 45 percent from the field and drained 43 percent (10-for-23) of their three-point attempts. The Wildcats were 44 percent from the field and 32 percent from long distance. SUNY Canton held advantages in rebounds (41-30), seconds chance points (11-4) and bench points (28-15). The Roos shot 24-for-32 from the free throw line, while Cazenovia only got to the charity stripe 10 times.

The men’s basketball team returns to the hardwood January 17 when they take on Rochester College at 7 p.m. in Montreal, Quebec in the Martin Luther King Classic.
