Games, prizes offered at free Canton skating event

CANTON - Hoping to promote ice skating for generations to come, the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club has organized a new skating event for all ages that will feature games, music, prizes and the chance to learn basic skating skills.

The free event, “It’s Great to Skate,” will run from noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Canton Recreational Pavilion, Outer Lincoln Street.

“Skating is an activity you can enjoy recreationally or competitively,” said Club President Edith D. Frazer. “It’s a lifelong activity.”

The upcoming winter Olympics in Russia will draw more attention to ice skating, which has been part of north country culture for generations.

Canton Recreation Director John S. Taillon said ice skates will be available for rent at $3 a pair. Depending on the weather, the outdoor ice rink may also be open.

“Anybody from any community is always welcome to skate here,” Mr. Taillon said. “I’m excited to work with the club on this.”

Mrs. Frazer said the U.S. Figure Skating organization encourages local skating clubs to celebrate National Skating Month as an opportunity for rinks and local programs to foster ice skating.

This year, roughly 400 clubs throughout the country are expected to participate.

Members of the 130-member St. Lawrence club will precede the activity with an 11:30 a.m. demonstration. Skaters will also teach basic skills to those learning to skate.

Prize bags will contain promotional skating items such as pencils, a small towel and stickers. Tickets will be sold for a winter fun raffle basket and a surprise basket. The concession stand will be open, with the proceeds going to the Canton Pee Wee Hockey Association.
