Massena girls rally past Canton; Potsdam skates to shutout win over Ithaca

Massena Central staged a dramatic comeback victory over Section 10 rival Canton while Potsdam Central pulled away to a convincing non-league 5-0 over Ithaca in high school girls hockey on Friday.

Massena 4, Canton 3 (OT): The host Bears overcame an early deficit with three unanswered second-period goals before the Lady Raiders (9-2, 3-1) regrouped to tie the game in the third then complete their turnaround in the opening minutes of overtime.

Abbie Paquin got Massena off to a strong start when she connected off an assist from Raechel Davis 4:59 into the game. The lead held until 5:51 into the second period when Natalie Giglio converted from Margret Troiano. Troiano made it 2-1 at the 8:42 mark assisted by Mary Kait Mace. Giglio closed out the second-period surge by finishing off a play set up by Troiano and Serrena Cline with 1:13 remaining.

Katie MacCuaig sparked the third-period rally when she cut the deficit to 3-2 at the 9:59 mark assisted by Paquin and Davis. Mia Jermano sent the game into overtime after knocking a loose puck into the back of the net through a scramble in front for a power play goal with 1:07 left in regulation.

Paquin completed the comeback just 1:10 into overtime scoring off an assist from Molly O’Connell.

Maddi Dillabough made 21 saves inthe win while Elizabeth Burke handled 32 shots for Canton.

Potsdam 5, Ithaca 0: Kelsey Green and Jenny Tardelli netted two goals each to anchor the Lady Sandstoner offense.

Allie Compeau and Sidney Molnar combined to make 11 saves sharing crease duties in the shutout.
