MADRID: Timothy P. Carkner, 64 of Burke, New York, passed away on January 9, 2014, surrounded by his family and friends. Tim was suddenly stricken with a severe illness and taken to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. Tim was born July 4, 1949, in Ogdensburg, New York, the son of Bernard and Barbara (Bushaw) Carkner of Madrid. Tim graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School in 1967. After graduation, Tim enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was trained to be a helicopter pilot. He was honorable discharged on June 4, 1970. He remained in the U.S. Marine Reserves until August 15, 1979, retiring as rank of Captain. Tim also received a Bachelor Degree in General Studies from Pepperdine University of Malibu, California. Tim began working as a Border Patrol Agent for the United States Border Patrol on November 4, 1974, and retired on July 31, 1999. He was stationed in various areas of country, including Ogdensburg and Burke, New York. Tim is survived by his son, Joseph Daniel Carkner, Beekmantown, New York, grandchildren, Kaylynn, Kylee and Kenneth Carkner, Waddington, a sister, Loretta Carkner, Norwood, brothers and sister in-laws, John and Silinda Carkner, Walworth, and Thomas and Michelle Carkner, Madrid; and aunt, Erma Carkner, Madrid; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, H. Bernard Carkner on December 29, 2011, and Barbara Carkner on December 26, 2012; a sister, Gretchen Carkner on July 15, 2003; and a brother Kenneth Carkner on November 7, 1980. A marriage to Christine Thompson ended in divorce. Tim had two other marriages that ended in divorce. After retirement from the United States Border Patrol, Tim enjoyed his farm, hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren, Kaylynn, Kylee and Kenny. Friends and family may call on January 12, 2014, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Phillips Memorial Home in Madrid, New York. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on January 13, 2014, at the St. Johns the Baptist Church in Madrid with Rev. Mgsr. Harry Snow presiding. Interment will be in Madrid Cemetery in the spring.
