WADDINGTON - Its time again for the Waddington Sons of the American Legions Come Hook Some Cold Hard Cash ice fishing derby on Feb. 8.
This year marks the 13th annual installment of the derby. Veteran anglers and novices alike are welcome to join in the fun.
The derby starts at sun-up Saturday morning and ends at 4 p.m. sharp. Again this year is a $50 prize for the best decorated ice shack, so use your imagination and get creative. The boundaries have been expanded to include the whole town of Waddington. The boundaries spread from the Iroquois Dam to the Coles Creek Marina and include all of the connecting waterways. New this year: the weigh-in station will be at the Coles Creek Marina.
Over $2,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded, including $500 for the heaviest live Northern Pike, $50 each for heaviest Walleye and Perch, 50/50, and numerous door prizes. Adult registration (age 16 and up) is $25 per person and children under 16 fish free. Prizes will be awarded immediately following the derby at the Champion-Hobkirk American Legion Post 420 on Fenton Street.
As usual, there is a kids bracket for the tournament. Any child under the age of 16 can register for free, and all of the registered children will receive a prize. They are more than welcome to attend the awards ceremony at the Legion.
Proceeds from the annual derby are used to support the Sons charitable work in Waddington and neighboring communities.
Anglers may pre-register at the American Legion Post 420, Fenton St, Waddington, Uppstroms Bait and Tackle on the Rookey Road, Green Machine Bait and Tackle, or they may register on the day of the derby at the weigh-in station at the Coles Creek Marina. Everyone participates at their own risk. For further information, please contact derby chairman, Mike Tiernan at 250-5252.
