Potsdam, Massena girls hockey team notch convincing shutout wins


The Potsdam Central and Massena Central girls hockey teams geared up for their late-season rematch this Friday by pulling away to convincing shutout wins on Wednesday.

The two Section 10 division leaders are set to face-off against each other on Friday at Pine Street Arena starting at 4:15 p.m. Potsdam, which stands atop the division at 5-0, won the first meeting between the two teams by the score of 6-0 as Massena (10-2, 3-1) will look to reverse its only league loss this winter.

Potsdam 8, SLC 0: At the Tri-Town Arena, the visiting Lady Sandstoners broke open a close game with four goals over the final five minutes of the first period.

Kalie Grant netted the eventual game-winner at the 10:07 mark assisted by Megan Plumb then made it a quick 2-0 lead when she finished off a play set up by Ally Miller and Jenny Tardelli just 13 seconds later. Grant then completed her natural hattrick at the 11:33 off an assist from Miller before Kirstin Barkley closed out the decisive first-period outburst with 26 seconds remaining assisted by Grant and Miller, who finished with four assists for the game.

Paige McCabe generated a pair of second-period goals. Jayden Young closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the final minute of regulation. She and Tardelli wound up with a goal and assist each while Megan Plumb logged a pair of helpers while Hannah Dreschel passed out a solo assist as the Lady Sandstoners improved to 10-2 overall.

Allie Compeau made seven saves working the crease through the first half of the game while Sidney Molnar turned aside the two shots she faced to preserve the shutout. Holly Zeldenrust recorded 34 stops for the Lady Larries.

The Lady Larries play host to Saranac Lake this Friday night at the Tri-Town Arena at 7 p.m.

Massena 8, Saranac Lake 0: Playing in their pink jerseys for Pink in the Rink Night at the Massena Arena, the Lady Raiders worked their way to a 4-0 lead through the first two periods before breaking the game open with four third-period tallies.

Maddy Mailhot netted the only goal Massena would need 4:56 into the game assisted by KC Herne. Katie MacCuaig made it 2-0 with 2:55 left in the opening frame assisted by Maya Swamp and Ambert Thomas.

MacCuaig anchored the Massena offense with two goals and an assist. Thomas generated a goal and two assists. Raechel Davis fashioned a goal and assist. Molly O’Connell, Bailey Thomas and Abbie Paquin struck for the other goals. Herne, Swamp and Bailey Dillabough each logged a pair of assists.

Maddi Dillabough (7 saves) and Kyrsten Stone (4 saves) shared crease duties in the shutout while Arianna Patraw (42 saves) and Lindsay Reeve (9 saves) combined to backstop the Red Storm.

Canton 5, Lake Placid 1: At the Canton Pavilion, the Lady Golden Bears netted a second period goal before taking control in the third where they built a 4-0 lead before the teams traded late goals.

Margret Troiano led the Canton offense with three goals and two assists. Natalie Giglio and Mary Kait Mace struck for the other goals while Blake Orosz assisted on four of the five goals and Giglio finished with a pair of helpers.

Samantha Barney netted the lone Lake Placid goal off an assist from Payton Barney with 1:53 left in regulation.

Elizabeth Burke handled 24 shots backstopping the win while Tanner Stanton logged 25 saves for the Blue Bombers.
