Canton attorney named St. Lawrence County Chief Assistant District Attorney

CANTON — St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary E. Rain has tapped David A. Haggard as her chief assistant district attorney.

Ms. Rain said she has been working on Mr. Haggard from day one to take the position, but he took some convincing.

“He has been in mind from the very start, but he has declined my offer several times,” Ms. Rain said. “The more I talked with him the more I was able to convince him that it would be a good move, not only for me but for him.”

Mr. Haggard was the right choice, Ms. Rain said, due to his experience and skill as a trial attorney.

Mr. Haggard, whose firm is currently located at 20 Park St., Canton, has concentrated his practice for the last 10 years in criminal defense, driving while intoxicated defense, family law, and civil litigation, according to his law firm’s website.

“He has leadership qualities and can take over the office if I am unavailable,” Ms. Rain said. “He has a great demeanor about him and he is well respected in the legal community and the community at large.”

Mr. Haggard was all smiles at the announcement and said he is looking forward to the challenge of a transforming office.

“I found it to be extremely exciting, with an emphasis on extremely,” Mr. Haggard said. “The things that Mary can bring to this office and the county just can’t be estimated.”

The new chief ADA said he was impressed by Ms. Rain’s work ethic, talent and commitment and is eager to learn from her.

Mr. Haggard said he doesn’t have an exact start date, but anticipates beginning sometime in April, after he transfers his law practice.

“I look forward to the challenge and look forward to helping her build a great staff here,” Mr. Haggard said. “The county just couldn’t be any luckier.”
