Raquette River to be highlighted on WPBS program Monday night

COLTON - The Raquette River will be in the spotlight beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday as “The Raquette River Winter Experience” will be airing on WPBS-DT, in the conclusion of a two-part documentary.

WPBS Digital TV began work on part one, “The Raquette River Experience,” in 2011 and finished filming in early 2012. The airing of that 30 minute program happened in 2012.

“They did a program covering more of the summertime activities and what you could do on the river at that time. It was so successful that they decided to do one on the wintertime as well,” Tourism and Beautification Coordinator Ruth T. McWilliams said.

Part two is hosted by renowned angler and FishCap Project Manager Don Meissner and is provided in parts by grants from Brookfield Renewable Energy, North Country Savings Bank and TJ Toyota of Potsdam.

The second portion of the program highlights the various activities provided by the towns along the Raquette River during the winter months.

Ms. McWilliams announced the news at the monthly Colton Town Board meeting this week. “We learned that WPBS has indeed completed its plans to air the new Raquette River program. It’s called the ‘Raquette River (Winter) Experience,’” she said. “The intention has always been that it would come out in January in time for all of these winter festivals, but we never got confirmation until today whether it was actually going to happen.”

According to the WPBS news release regarding the airing of the program, the Raquette River Blueway Corridor group was “instrumental in the creation of this two-part series.”

During the Winterfest Committee’s meeting on Thursday, the final one before the start of the annual event, committee members made a plan to show the program to the public on two occasions.

It will be shown at the new Higley Trails Lodge during Family Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 25,. The same day, viewers can see “The Raquette River Winter Experience” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Colton-Pierrepont Central School Auditorium.

“The school showing is wedged between the spaghetti dinner and the concert. Displays will be set up at both locations with information about the Raquette River Blueway Corridor and the new WPBS program, and we hope to have DVDs of the show available for purchase,” Ms. McWilliams said.

The coordinator added that attempts are being made to get Mr. Meissner in town that day to talk to the audience about the program, fishing along the Raquette, and other topics.

Part two will also re-air on WPBS-DT at 11:30 p.m. Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. Jan. 25, at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 2, at 10:30 p.m. Feb. 7 and again on-line at
