Gov. Cuomo rapped for remarks on guns, gay marriage

To The Editor:

During a January 17, 2014 conversation with Susan Arbetter on “The Capitol Pressroom” Friday morning NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo said:

The Republican Party candidates are running against the SAFE Act — it was voted for by moderate Republicans who run the Senate. Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves.

Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.

Governor Cuomo left little room for misunderstanding: if you are a Republican who is pro-life there is no place for you in New York state; if you are a Republican who supports the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and opposes the NYS SAFE Act, there is no place for you in New York state; and if you are a Republican who supports marriage between one man and one woman, there is no place for you in New York State.

What about non-Republicans who hold one or more of the same conservative views; is there a place for them in New York state?

Perhaps the new advertising campaign slogan “New York State Open For Business” should add a qualifier that says “New York State Open For Business unless you are pro-life, or you oppose the SAFE Act, or you support marriage between one man and one woman; in that case, try another state.”
