Unemployment rates down from 2012; Jefferson, Lewis rates still among state’s highest

December unemployment rates in the north country are down sharply from December 2012 across all three counties.

The largest drop was in Lewis County, which fell from 11.1 to 8.9 percent. In St. Lawrence County, the rate dropped from 10.1 percent in 2012 to 8.1 percent in 2013. Jefferson County’s rate dropped from 10.8 to 9.1 percent.

St. Lawrence County’s rate also was down from the month before, from 8.3 to 8.1 percent, while Jefferson County’s rose from 9 to 9.1 percent for the month and Lewis County’s rose from 8.3 to 8.9 percent.

Jefferson County’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the state, tied for second with Hamilton County, and Lewis County’s rate is third highest.
