Strong finish lifts Massena boys to NAC Central hoops win over Potsdam

MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team used a strong finish to turn back Potsdam Central 65-49 in the lone NAC Central Division game played on Tuesday.

“Potsdam shot the ball very well in the first half. We got more active defensively in the second half and did a much better job of taking their shots away,” said coach Tom Miller after the Raiders put together a 21-7 fourth-quarter run to put away the Sandstoners, who had worked their way to a 26-25 halftime lead.

Freshman Dante Viskovich netted 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Raiders (12-3, 10-1). Junior Zevon Viskovich added 13 points followed by senior Tyler Haas with 12. Senior Xavier Viskovich and junior Logan Deshane added eight points apiece while senior Rhoades Tarbell accounted for the other two.

Sophomore Brian Cole fired through six of the nine three-pointers recorded by the Sandstoners in finishing with a team-high 19 points. Classmate Jack Byrnes chipped in 11 points followed by junior Dequan Pitts with nine points and senior Nick Vaccaro with six. Junior Jake Mitchell and sophomore Connor Prosper closed out the Potsdam (8-7, 6-5) scoresheet with two points each.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday with the Raiders turning back the clock when the host St. Lawrence Central on Retro Night when hot dogs, soda and chips will be priced at 25 cents and the Massena cagers will be wearing 70’s-style uniforms. Potsdam will be heading to Malone to take on Franklin Academy.

In the other NAC boys basketball action to survive more wind-swept winter weather on Tuesday, a pair of East Division games saw Madrid-Waddington outlast Colton-Pierrepont 72-68 and St. Regis Falls beat Chateaugay 63-35 while West Division matchups had Edwards-Knox downing Heuvelton 58-42, Harrisville stopping Clifton-Fine 43-33 and Morristown dropping Lisbon 61-38. The lone NAC girls basketball contest on Tuesday saw Heuvelton pull away to an 82-40 West Division win over Edwards-Knox.

M-W 72, C-P 68: In Colton, the visiting Yellowjackets ran out to a 22-12 lead by the end of the first quarter before the Colts stormed back with a 24-15 second-quarter run that cut the deficit to 37-36 at the half. M-W regrouped to outscore the Colts 20-15 in the third quarter and went on deny a fourth-quarter comeback.

David Odendahl anchored a balanced offense for the Yellowjackets (7-6, 6-3) with 19 points. Jacob Barney tossed through another 13 followed by Zach Brock with 11 and Aaron Armstrong with eight. Brandon Vice and Dakota Matthie chipped in six points each while Harrison VanBuren drilled a three-pointer and Alex Hammond netted a pair of free throws.

Zach Farr fired through five of the 10 three-pointers generated by the Colts in notching a game-high 24 points. Ethan Knight struck for another four threes in a 19-point contribution. Scott Boyce tallied 13 points and Riley Doyle finished with 10 while Jon Angleberger closed out the C-P (4-10, 3-8) scoring with two points.

SRF 63, Chateaugay 35: At St. Regis Falls, the host Saints relayed a 37-12 halftime lead into their 16th straight win while clinching sole possession of the East Division banner by improving to 12-0 with two league games remaining.

Louis Goodrow led the way offensively with 20 points. Brandon Votra netted another 15 followed by Daggett with nine and Ryan Duquette with eight.

Noah Bowes led Chateaugay (8-6, 7-3) with 10 points. Zack Cowan added six points and Owen Henderson another five.
