SLC girls relay strong finish into win over Massena

MASSENA - The St. Lawrence Central varsity girls basketball team used a strong finish in generating a 49-32 NAC Central Division win on the road over Massena Central on Thursday.

Lindsey Thayer led the way offensively with a game-high 12 points as the Lady Larries (9-5, 6-4) worked their way to a 29-24 lead through the first three quarters before going on a decisive 20-8 run in the fourth to come away with their second win over the Lady Raiders in six days. Bailee Gauthier and Jenna Kesner added nine points apiece while Chelsea Savage and Morgan Greer each finished with six followed by Breanna Evans with three and Abby Taylor with two.

Samanntha Villnave and Jessica Rode anchored the Massena scoring with five points apiece. Bailee Young, Sophia Rusaw and Devin Kelly added four points each while Stephanie McKeel, Robin Boudreau and Jaylee Jones all finished with two as the Lady Raiders slipped to 4-10 overall and 3-7 in the division.

In the other two NAC Central Division girls basketball matchups on Thursday, Franklin Academy downed Potsdam 51-20 and Gouverneur outlasted Salmon River 61-49.

FA 51, Potsdam 20: In Potsdam, the visiting Lady Huskies (13-1, 11-0) only led 7-6 after the first quarter before outscoring the Lady Sandstoners (1-14, 0-11) 37-12 over the next two. Morgan Fountain led all scorers with 16 points followed by Rachel Lamica and Emily Marshall with eight apiece.

Sarah Vivlamore netted a team-high 10 points for Potsdam followed by Bre Sapp with four while Katherine Blanchard, Matisyn Beamer and Courtney DiTullio each finished with two.

Gouverneur 61, Salmon River 49: At Fort Covington, the Lady Wildcats (5-9, 3-9) built a 43-37 lead through three quarters before closing with an 18-12 run in the fourth to come away with the win. Danielle Bullock led a balanced offense with 14 points followed by Rebecca Bulsiewicz with 13 while Jessica Rotunda and Alisha Way contributed 12 apiece.

Taylor Francis tossed through a game-high 15 points in the losing cause. Jaden Mitchell netted 11 followed by Brittany Brooks with nine, Oakes with eight, Lexis Jacobs with four and Tsiotenhanio Herne with two as Salmon River fell to 4-7 overall and 4-6 in the division.

CENTRAL BOYS

In the only NAC Central boys basketball game played on Thursday, Gouverneur outscored St. Lawrence Central 43-33 in overtime.

Curt LaPlant netted a game-high 14 points, including three three-pointers, in the winning effort as the Wildcats (5-9, 2-8) built a 14-4 lead in the first quarter then regrouped from a steady SLC comeback through the next three quarters to put together a decisive 12-2 run in overtime. Dustin Hutton netted six of his 12 points in the extra session. Devin Cox added eight points followed by Jordan Chambers with five and Ben Casey with four.

Cody Meacham and Brad Francis anchored the Larries offense with nine points apiece as Meacham sent the game into overtime with a three-pointer in the final minute of regulation. Trent Saumier added eight points followed by Josh White with four and Jayce Lanning with the other three.
