GOUVERNEUR — Eric S. Sovie, 34, and Heather M. Rider-Sovie, 27, both of 1404 County Route 12, Apt. A, were charged by St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies with third-degree welfare fraud, a class D felony, and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony, for which Ms. Rider-Sovie received two counts, at 9:20 a.m. Saturday.

Deputies said that an investigation by the Investigations Unit of the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services determined the recently married couple failed to report an accurate household income to the department and, as a result, received $9,607 in food stamps, Home Energy Assistance Program aid and day care benefits between April 4, 2009, and Sept. 30, 2012, to which they were not entitled.

Both Mr. Sovie and Ms. Rider-Sovie were arraigned in Town Court.
