POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam mens and womens basketball teams gained a dramatic sweep over SUNY Oswego at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Joe Estramonte drained his sixth 3-point field goal at the buzzer to lift the host Bears to a 68-66 SUNYAC upset over the Lakers (14-8, 8-7). Estramonte scored a team-high 20 points and Zac Adams added 18 for SUNY Potsdam (4-17, 2-12). Rob Duquette and Colin Peterson contributed 10 points apiece toward the winning effort.
Mark Candelario anchored the Oswego scoring with 12 points. Rashawn Powell and Jame Mosley added 10 points apiece followed by Keith Tyson with eight.
The Bears are slated to host SUNY Cortland today starting at 4 p.m.
The womens team (6-15, 4-10 SUNYAC) rallied late and outscored Oswego State (6-16, 2-13) 15-5 in overtime to defeat the Lakers 89-80. Bears senior captain Jessica Kouzan (Webster, N.Y.) scored 21 points to move past Maureen Curley 09 into sixth place on the programs all-time scoring list with 959 career points. Kouzan also hauled in 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Junior captain Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y.) grabbed a career-high 17 boards to go with her 17 points.
Laker senior guard Jenn Robbins (Geneva, N.Y.) hit seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points.
Trailing, by five with 44 seconds on the clock, Kouzan went to work. She buried a three to close to within 74-72 nine seconds later. With 24 ticks left, she stole the ball from Robbins and was fouled attempting a game-tying layup. She sank both free throws to tie the score and Robbins missed the final attempt of the second half.
It was nearly all Hannah Kmiecinski (Webster, N.Y.) in the extra session. The senior captain hit two 3-pointers and was five-of-six from the line for 11 of Potsdams 16 points in overtime. Weigel accounted for the other four points as the Bears finished the season sweep of the Lakers, 89-80.
Kmiecinski totaled 14 points on the night. Kouzan also had two blocks and two steals, while Weigel filled out her impressive line with seven steals. Lost in the drama was a career-high 12 points from freshman guard Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y.).
Sophomore guard Heather Hebert (Hilton, N.Y.) had a solid night for Oswego with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Lauren Nunziato (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) had 10 points, five boards and four assists.
The Bears look host SUNY Cortland today at 2 p.m.
