MASSENA - Less than 24 hours after a robbery took place at Alkie’s Liquor Store, Massena Village Police had made an arrest, with the suspect now being held in the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.

“I would like to formally commend the patrol officer and our detective unit for their team effort in the expeditious manner in which they were able to capture the individual who robbed Alkie’s liquor store,” Massena Mayor James F. Hidy said. “Once again we’ve witnessed the professionalism and value our police department provides to the community.”

Brian D. LaPrade was charged with third-degree burglary and petit larceny after allegedly walking into the store with a white shirt wrapped around his face, demanding money from the cashier. He left the store with approximately $50, which he admitted to using to buy drugs.

Mr. Hidy said these types of crimes have increased in Massena in the last several years, but he feels like things are again turning around in the community’s favor.

“The village and its citizens continue to be appreciative of the collaborative effort and continued support provided by the state police, sheriff’s department, U.S. Border Patrol and park police,” he said.

When asked what he thought the quick turnaround on the arrest in this case said about Massena’s police department, he said it’s further evidence of the village having one of the best police departments in the region.

“There’s no question in my mind that given the new types of crime they’re dealing with, the Massena Police Department is second to none,” he said.
