CANTON - For Madrid-Waddington, making a run to a class championship game is becoming a constant in the Section 10 Boys Basketball landscape.

On Saturday, coach Aaron Jones’ Jackets will meet NAC East rival Chateaugay at 2:45 p.m. at SUNY Canton looking for their third straight Class D title and state tournament berth. And for a second straight year, M-W has plotted a steady course to two upset victories.

On Thursday night, at SUNY Canton, the seventh seeded Jackets impressively dropped third-seeded NAC West Division Champion Lisbon 57-40 to win the Class D2 Championship following up on a comeback victory over second seeded Morristown. Fourth seeded Chateaugay reached the finals by scoring the upset of the season in boys basketball as the Bulldogs handed top-seeded and number three state-ranked St. Regis Falls its first loss of the season in a 54-47 decision.

The Jackets and Bulldogs split their two division games.

“I knew right from the start that this team would be ready for the playoffs. Our seniors give us a great leadership and our sophomores aren’t playing like sophomores any more,” said Jones. “Chateaugay is an outstanding team. Defensively they are in your face all of the time.”

M-W 57, Lisbon 40: The Jackets (12-9) established an extended and very aggressive zone defense immediately against Lisbon (15-5) snatching two steals and taking a 3-0 lead on a three-pointer by Aaron Armstrong.

A lead the Jackets never relinquished and a lead which they methodically expanded to 43-20 at the end of three quarters by frustrating the Knights with their defense.

Guard David Odendahl hit a three-pointer in each of the first three quarters and finished with 15 points in a balanced offense. Armstrong (8 rebounds) buried five of six free throws in the fourth quarter scoring 11 points and T.J. Gagnon crafted a 10-point, 16-rebound double-double. Jacob Barney tallied eight points with eight assists and Zach Brock scored six second-half points.

Alex Hammond added four third-quarter points and Harrison VanBuren buried a three-pointer.

But before claiming the win the Jackets had to steady themselves after a pair of threes by Jake Putney, trifectas by Koby Jordan and Jimmy Robinson and two putbacks by Ryan Buckley fueled a determined Lisbon comeback which cut the margin to 11 points on two occasions.

Lisbon’s effort was anchored by double-doubles of 15 points and 11 rebounds by Robinson and 11 points and 11 rebounds by Buckley. Putney finished with 11 points and Jordan finished with six points, three assists and three steals. Chateaugay 54, SRF 47: In the second game of the night at the SUNY Canton Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs (15-6) worked their way to a 29-25 halftime lead then outscored the Saints (19-1) 19-15 in the fourth quarter to earn their berth to the Class D final. Seth Young scored a game-high 22 points in the winning effort. Noah Bowes added 14 followed by Jordan Martin with eight.

Brandon Votra paced SRF with 20 points. Louis Goodrow chipped in nine.
