To The Editor:
Parents, did you know your child does not have to take the New York state tests this coming March, April and May? As a parent, you cannot opt your child out, but your child can refuse to take the test.
According to state law, the classroom teacher must distribute the test to all students. Your child simply needs to politely push the test aside and state, I refuse to take this test. It is important your child does not write on the exam no matter what they are told. Go to the website Unitedoptout.com, click on your state, and download the New York pdf. This file will explain how your child will receive a score of 999, meaning refusal.
By refusing the test, it will not affect the teachers evaluation or your childs ability to receive Academic Intervention Services.
This website will also provide sample letters to send to schools, teachers and administrators for you to use or edit as appropriate.
Teachers, last week the New York State United Teachers stated it will vigorously defend any teacher who is punished or poorly evaluated based on your childs refusal to take the test. You have a right to protect your own children as well as ours.
If your school questions this, please refer to the United States Constitution, Title 20, Chapter 48, Subchapter 1, Section 3401:#3, Congress finds parents have the primary responsibility for the education of their children, and states, localities and private institutions have the primary responsibility for supporting that parental role.
Its time to stand against Common Core and stand up for our children! If we dont, who will?
