Aubertine says he won’t run for Congress

CAPE VINCENT — Darrel J. Aubertine, a prominent Democrat in the 21st Congressional District, announced today he would not seek the seat being vacated by Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh.

“Serving the North Country in public service over more than 20 years has been an honor and something I hope to do for the foreseeable future.” Mr. Aubertine said in a news release.“Certainly, the opportunity to serve as your representative in Congress would have been a tremendous opportunity to continue this service, but after much discussion with my family, I have decided not to run for Congress this year.

The former state legislator and commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets said his current position in state government also affected his decision.

“I look forward to continuing my work as a public servant by representing your interests and the interests of our state in my role as a special assistant in the state comptroller’s office,” he said in the statement.“I am excited to work with our next representative in Congress in any way I can to keep bringing the interests of the North Country to Washington as Mr. Owens did for the past five years.”
