Thunder Bantams claim top seed from Tier II 14-Under Sectional Tournament

MASSENA - The St. Lawrence Thunder Bantam boys hockey team went undefeated through four games to claim top honors at the North Zone Tier II 14-Under Sectional Tournament staged at the Massena Arena this past weekend.

Coached by Bobby Smith, Jeff Allen and Ed Underwood and made up of players from around St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, the Thunder went 3-0-1 over the course of the three days, opening with a 4-0 win over the Adirondack Wild on Friday night before downing the Bethlehem Eagles by the same score in their only game on Saturday. They returned to the ice Sunday morning and settled for a 4-4 tie with the Saratoga Blue Knights before closing out the tournament by pulling away to a 9-0 decision over the Plattsburgh Roadrunners.

The Thunder Bantams will now gear up to defend their NYSAHA tournament title the weekend of March 7-9 in Amherst.

Thunder 4, Wild 0: Cole Moore scored the first goal with just 2:30 into the first period. Assists went to Billy Bergan and Jared Barr. Cole Allen scored the second goal with 45 seconds left in the first period. Nathan Bressard and Kyran Sunday assisted on the second goal. Just 28 seconds later, Joshua Sanchez scored the third goal of the game with assists to Jacob Mattice and Kyler Head. Halfway through the third period, Joshua Underwood scored the final goal of the game unassisted.

Grant VanBuren had the shutout in nets for the St. Lawrence Thunder.

The other Friday night game saw Saratoga and Bethlehem battle to a 2-2 draw.

Thunder 4, Eagles 0: Nathan Bressard scored the first goal of the game 9:16 into the first period. Cole Allen assisted on the goal. Joshua Sanchez scored an unassisted goal for the Thunder at 11:31 in the second period. Allen scored an unassisted goal at 7:53 in the second period. Sanchez scored the final goal of the game with assists to Corson Green and Josh Underwood.

Merrick Taraska backstopped the shutout.

The other Saturday games saw the Wild outscore the Roadrunners 6-4, the Blue Knights rout the Roadrunners 13-1 and the Wild blank the Eagles 3-0.

Thunder 4, Blue Knights 4: The first goal of the game was scored by Corson Green with an assist to Kyler Head. Nathan Bressard scored the second goal with assists to Cole Allen and Josh Underwood. Joshua Sanchez scored the third goal for the Thunder with the assist going to Isaac Thrasher. The final goal of the game was scored by Broadie Woods with an assist to Jared Barr.

Merrick Taraska backstopped the tie for the Thunder with 18 saves in the net.

Thunder 9, Roadrunners 0: Kyler Head scored the first goal of the game with an assist to Jared Barr with 1:56 remaining in the first peirod. Nathan Bressard scored the second goal of the game early in the second period with assists to Head and Jared Barr. Cole Allen scored from Bressard and Kyran Sunday. Barr scored the fourth goal of the game assisted by Head. Broadie Woods scored the fifth goal with assists to Barr and Head. Barr scored the sixth goal late in the second period assisted by Josh Underwood. Allen scored the seventh goal early in the third period assisted by Bressard. Mark Mahoney scored an unassisted goal midway through the third period. Sunday rounded out the scoring with the final goal of the game unassisted at the end of the third period.

Grant VanBuren recorded the shutout in net for the Thunder.

The other two Sunday matchups saw Bethlehem hold off Plattsburgh 6-4 and Saratoga beat Adirondack 4-1 to clinch the second seed out of the section for the state tournament.
