MASSENA - A Massena couple that had been operating an embroidery business out of their Grove Street home are now running their business out of a store front on Main Street.

April L. Holder, who co-owns A&J Embroidery Services with her husband, Jeff, said they simply ran out of space at their Grove Street location prior to making the move to 10 Main St., the former Precious Memories store location.

“I was in a 10x20 building, and we simply outgrew that,” Ms. Holder said, adding the shop’s equipment was all housed in a building next to her house that customers affectionately called “The Shed.”

Ms. Holder said the business now has 4,400 square feet available.

“We’re only using the upper floor now, but we have room to grow,” she said.

Ms. Holder also noted that the opening of a storefront on Main Street has already allowed the business to grow.

“We wanted to offer school apparel,” she said, explaining that was one of the reasons they elected to move downtown. “That was part of the reason. Between the lack of space and wanting to offer merchandise, expansion was something we had to do.”

The front of A&J Embroidery Services is a store front, featuring decals and clothing from Massena, Norwood-Norfolk, St. Lawrence Central and Salmon River schools.

When customers would stop by the shed looking for school-related merchandise, Ms. Holder said she would have to run inside the family’s home.

“Before, I had to say, ‘Let me run into the house and see if I have that,” she said.

In addition to offering already completed shirts, sweatshirts, hats and more, Ms. Holder said the business offers almost anything someone could think of.

“We’re trying to keep up with the popular trends and bring them to our little hometown,” she said, noting in addition to embroidery services on everything from T-shirts, sweat shirts and athletic uniforms to shorts, sweat pants, and even dancing and skating apparel, they can also decorate almost anything with rhinestones.

A&J Embroidery Services also offers custom decals, laser engraving, sign making, custom printing, skate sharpening, and even some hockey supplies, such as tape and laces.

“We can also design a logo for you or work with the logo you already have,” she said.

The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

A&J Embroidery may be reached at (315) 769-1284.
