POTSDAM - The Urgent Care Center, a 2,900 square-foot walk-in clinic, saw its first patients Monday.
The center leases space from Canton-Potsdam Hospital in the hospitals Cheel Medical Campus at 49 Lawrence Ave. Designed to meet the need for unexpected non-emergency care, the Urgent Care Centers hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except during major holidays.
The Urgent Care Center is designed for busy professionals, parents of school-aged children, college students, and others who may have a condition that needs to be seen right away, but who may not be able to get a same-day appointment with their regular primary practitioner or college health center, said Milly Smith, PA-C, owner-operator of QuikMed Urgent Care, Inc., of Watertown.
Ms. Smith will oversee operations of the Potsdam center. Its also designed as a lower-cost alternative to Emergency Department care, she added.
Conditions such as sports-related injuries, sore throats, stomach pain or upset, pelvic pain, bites, or puncture woundsthese can be assessed in an urgent care setting while freeing the Emergency Department for conditions such as difficulty breathing, bleeding associated with pregnancy, chest pain, or other conditions requiring advanced care, said Ms. Smith.
In alignment with best practice, patients must present themselves physically to The Urgent Care Centers experienced staff: we do not provide medical advice by phone, but weve designed the experience to be fast and of high quality, she said. Its intended as a one-time quick option for the unexpected and is not a replacement for regular care: patients will be asked to follow up with their primary care practitioner, and if they dont have one, well offer referrals.
The Urgent Care Center is a collaborative project of Canton-Potsdam Hospital and QuikMed Urgent Care, Inc. It consists of examination rooms and procedure rooms and is located adjacent to other medical services which share the Cheel Medical Campus, such as a primary care center, physical rehabilitation center, and specialist practices.
The Urgent Care Center is also located in close proximity to other walk-in services: imaging services are available to walk-in patients with any practitioners order (not just to patients of The Urgent Care Center), as are laboratory services, which are also walk-in for those with an order.
Imaging services are available daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; laboratory services are available 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Walk-in patients must still register for services: for the laboratory, patients register in the Primary Care Center; for imaging, patients will register in The Urgent Care Center.
CPHs Afterhours Walk-in Clinic continues to serve the Canton community. Located in the E. J. Noble Professional Building at 80 E. Main Street, adjacent to the campus of St. Lawrence University, the Afterhours Walk-in Clinics hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
