SUNY Potsdam laxwomen down Clarkson on season opener

POTSDAM - Freshman Ashley Flick (Watertown, NY) tallied three goals in her first game, but the Clarkson University women’s lacrosse team fell to cross-town rival SUNY Potsdam 10-8 in the season opener for both squads on Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson got the scoring started as sophomore Christine Wright (Watertown, NY) found the back of the net off the opening faceoff 29 seconds into the game. Potsdam answered less than a minute later as Bailey Weigel tied the game at 1-1.

The Knights regained the lead just over six minutes into the game when freshman Paige Fayette (Therese, NY) scored the first of her pair in the game. Brittany Blake would tie the game at 2-2 just one minute later.

Emily Petit gave the Bears their first lead of the game nine minutes into the first half, and Bri McClusky would add to it a few minutes later to put Potsdam up 4-2. Fayette scored her second goal of the game with just over nine minutes to play in the half to cut the Potsdam lead in half.

Nicole Damon got the goal back for the Bears and gave Potsdam the 5-3 lead, but Flick would strike for her first goal of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the first half to keep the Knights in the within striking distance. Margaret Wall would get the Bears on the board again, but Flick answered with another goal to keep the deficit at one goal going into halftime.

Clarkson tied the game at the beginning of the second half as Flick tallied her third goal of the game less than three minutes into the period. McClusky would respond and regain the lead for the Bears 10 minutes into the half.

The Knights would once again tie the score as Wright found junior Danielle Faivus (Oswego, NY) who finished for the goal to know the game at 7-7. Potsdam would then string three goals together over the final 10 minutes grow the lead.

Wright would again find Faivus with 39 seconds to play to cut the lead to 10-8, and although they won the ensuing draw, the Knights could not score again.

POTSDAM GAMES MOVED

Due to icy field conditions, both SUNY Potsdam men’s and women’s lacrosse home-opening contests will be moved to Clarkson University’s Hantz field. Game times are unchanged.

The women’s contest against Utica College will take place at noon, while the men host Alfred State at 2:20 p.m.

As a result of the move, video of the contests will not be streamed over the Internet.
