Winter storm warning takes effect for NNY Wednesday morning; up to foot of snow expected

Another winter storm, with a potential for up to a foot of snow in the St. Lawrence Valley and 17 inches of snow in the Watertown area is approaching the north country.

The National Weather Service’s latest winter storm warning takes effect for Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday in St. Lawrence County.

Forecasters expect a total of 10 to 17 inches of snow to accumulate in Lewis County; 9 to 16 inches in Jefferson and 8 to 12 inches of snow in St. Lawrence County.

Northeast winds with gusts up 40 mph could cause near-whiteout conditions in Jefferson and Lewis counties, the weather service said.

In St. Lawrence County, wind gusts may reach up to 35 miles per hour, with snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour possible at times Wednesday afternoon and evening. The storm is expected to start with light snow Wednesday morning and grow progressively worse throughout the day.

High temperatures Wednesday will be in the low 20s with the mercury dropping to 4 to 8 degrees by evening.*

The weather service is asking Northern New York drivers to keep an extra flashlight and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency if they must travel during the snow storm.
