MALONE - Members of the area speech and debate programs met on Saturday at Franklin Academy. However, this was an invitation-only competition involving the top 25 percent of all performers in the speech and debate events throughout the school year. So, the numbers were not as large but the quality was exceptional.
The goal for the tournament was to win one of the top two places in the category of choice. In accomplishing this goal, those two students automatically receive an invitation to attend the national forensics tournament in Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. If a student wins more than one event, he/she must choose which category the student will engage in at the tournament.
The winners in the eight events include the following:
Duo-Performance: Alyssa Ryan and Kathryn Travis (Madrid-Waddington); Taylor Shanty and Madison Crowe (Franklin Academy)
Oral Interpretation: Corinne Leduc (Brushton-Moira); Noah Chichester (Potsdam)
Oratorical Declamation: James Miller (Madrid-Waddington); Anna DeRosa (Potsdam)
Dramatic Performance: Gwyneth Heuser (Potsdam); Corinne OBrien (Potsdam)
Extemporaneous Oratory: Michael Hobbs (Potsdam); Dominic Frascatore (Potsdam)
Original Oratory: Deea Das (Potsdam)
Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Daniel Chichester (Potsdam)
Public Forum Debate: Brian Timmerman and Gwen Deuel (Potsdam); Christian Benware and Adelynn Murphy (Franklin Academy)
