Naomi M. French, of Marco Island, FL, passed away on March 9, 2014 at Avow Hospice, Naples, FL. Born in Noxen, PA on January 4, 1926, Naomi was the daughter of Frederick and Rachael Schenck.

Naomi graduated in 1944 from Noxen High School. She was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and graduated in 1947 from the Moses Taylor Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She married Joseph R. French, also of Noxen, PA, on August 3, 1947.

In 1960, Naomi and her husband moved to Brasher Falls, NY where they raised their family and spent many years enjoying snowmobiling, motorcycling, and tending to her incredible flower and vegetable gardens. When she wasn’t outside, Naomi was busy sewing, oil painting, putting puzzles together with her grandchildren or checking in on husband, Joe, out in his workshop. She was an accomplished quilter and her quilts are treasured by family members. Even in her 80’s, she made and donated over 60 baby quilts for children of migrant workers.

In 1978 Naomi retired from Massena Memorial Hospital in Massena, NY after a long nursing career. In retirement, Naomi and Joe became the quintessential snowbirds, traveling southward to Florida in the winter, and spending the warm summer months at their home in Brasher. They entertained their grandchildren every summer with forts in their back yard and home cooked meals from her garden. After Joe’s death, Naomi decided she was ready for warm weather year-round and in 2003 made her home in Marco Island, FL. Naomi enjoyed a long and wonderful life filled with family, Yankees baseball, chatting about the latest news on television, and volunteering with her church. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Marco Island, FL, and was active in the United Methodist Church her entire life. Naomi was also a life-time member of the Lyra-Laurentian-Cretina-Vega Chapter 230, Order of the Eastern Star.

Naomi was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Joseph R. French and her sister, Lois Cahill.

She will be missed by her family, including her sisters, Janet Hanstine, Port Orange, FL; Alice Myers, Snellville, GA; and Emilie Dendler, Winthrop, NY, as well as, her daughters, Jo Ann (James) Cartwright, Port Deposit, MD; Barbara (Gregory) Frey, Marco Island, FL; and Carol (Bruce) Tytler, Cortland, NY and five grandchildren: Carrie Cartwright (Kurt Shrewsbury), Sunbury, OH; Erica Cartwright, Owings Mills, MD. ; James Cartwright, North Hollywood, CA; Rachael (Ryan) Murray, Troy, NY; and, Sarah Tytler, Ithaca, NY.

Visitation at the Nulton Funeral Home, Beaumont, PA will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 14, 2014. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Noxen United Methodist Church, Noxen, PA.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter, 9220 Bonita Beach Rd, Suite 223, Bonita Springs, FL 34135 or the United Methodist Church of choice.
