BRASHER FALLS - The Tri-Town Timberwolves PeeWees made defending the USA Hockey Tier III Northeast Regional Championship look easy in Smithville, Rhode Island, over the weekend.
Coached by Brad Adams, Chad Phippen and Chris Rose, the Timberwolves followed up a tournament opening 6-2 win over the New Hampshire Northern Cyclones on Friday by outscoring their next four opponents 18-3, including back-to-back 5-1 victories in the semifinal and championship games on Sunday.
In their, two other preliminary rounds wins on Saturday, they outscored Avon, Connecticut 3-1 and the Massachusetts Brewins 5-0 to earn the top seed from their division for the semifinals where they surged past the Portland Junior Pirates of Maine. They went on to handled Connecticut in the title game.
Timberwolves 3, Avon 1: The locals scored two unanswered goals in the third period to post their second win of the weekend. Jah Robertson finished off a play set up by Payton Felix and Noah Adams in the opening frame but Avon pulled even with the lone goal of the second period.
Felix sparked the Timberwolves in the third with a pair of goals assisted by Grant Taylor.
Rico DiMatteo turned aside 14 shots backstopping the win.
Timberwolves 5, Brewins 0: The Timberwolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period then put the game out of reach with two more goals in the second to clinch the top seed from their round robin division. Kaleb Rathbun broke through for the first two goals of the game and later notched an assist in a three-point effort. Jah Robertson tallied a goal and assist. John Sullivan and Felix connected for the other goals. Carter Rose and Tyler Svarczkopf each logged solo assists.
Torran Robertson made 12 saves working the crease for the shutout.
Timberwolves 5, Junior Pirates 1: In their Sunday morning semifinal round matchups, the Timberwolves once again set the tone in the opening frame with three goals as Taylor, Jarrett St. Hilaire and Rose found the back of the net. Felix tallied a second-period goal while Jah Robertson closed out the scoring in the third.
Robertson also fashioned a pair of assists along with Rathbun. Sullivan, Felix and St. Hilaire each produced solo helpers.
DiMatteo (2 periods, 12 saves) and Torran Robertson (1 period, 5 saves) shared crease duties in the win.
Timberwolves 5, Avon 1: The championship game saw the Timberwolves break open a close game with three goals in the middle frame. Logan Shantie struck for an unassisted goal in the first period then tallied the third Tri-Town goal of the game. Felix (1 assist) sparked the second period surge with what would hold up as the game-winner. Jah Robertson (2 assists) and Adams (1 assist) connected for the other goals. Rose drew a solo assist.
DiMatteo (15 saves) and Torran Robertson (3 saves) combined to backstop the win.
Also aiding the championship effort this past weekend were Brendan Phippen, Ryan LePage, Olivia Hunter and Jasmine Pyke.
