On Friday afternoon the New York State Police were joined by members of the Ogdensburg City Police, St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Department and Border Patrol for an active shooter drill at the Ogdensburg Free Academy.
School faculty and staff participated in the drill to practice their emergency plans and the drill gave an opportunity for local law enforcement to gain familiarity with the school.
During the drill several members of the State Police acted as school shooters as other law enforcement agencies teamed up to clear the building and kill or capture the intruders.
Ogdensburg Police Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr. said the drill provided a chance for multiple agencies to learn to work together in the event of a crisis and offered them an opportunity to interact with teachers and determine the strengths and weaknesses of the schools emergency planning. Mr. Polniak, who brought roughly a dozen officers with him, said its helpful for his officers to be as familiar as possible with the school.
