CANTON — Greg Carey and younger brother Matt Carey, who have both left St. Lawrence University to test the waters of the free agent market, each appeared to be close to signing with an National Hockey League team, as of Tuesday evening.

Both Greg, a senior winger, and Matt, a redshirt freshman forward, both decided to turn pro after their collegiate seasons ended on Saturday night when the Saints were swept by Colgate in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.

Greg Carey has narrowed his choices to three teams and one of his strong candidates is the Minnesota Wild, according to a source. Both Greg Carey and Matt Carey said they would likely make their respective decisions of signing with an NHL team sometime today, both confirmed by phone on Tuesday.

Both Careys finished the campaign tied for the team goal-scoring lead with 18 goals each, with Greg and Matt finishing 1-2 in team scoring, respectively.

Greg Carey stands third in the nation in points (57) and points per game (1.50) and still leads the country in assists (39) and assists per game.

Matt Carey, who finished fourth in ECAC Hockey in goal-scoring, ranks third in the nation among first-year players in goals (18), points (37) and is fourth in points per game (0.97).
