DEKALB JUNCTION What started as a kitchen fire Sunday afternoon escalated quickly, engulfing the house at 2974 County Route 17.
DeKalb Junction Fire Department responded to the 3:39 p.m. call. Mutual aid was provided by Canton, Richville, Hermon, Heuvelton and Rensselaer Falls fire departments, with Gouverneur, Morley and Lisbon on standby.
St. Lawrence County Fire Investigator W. Joseph Lacks said that while there were no injuries, the house was a total loss.
The home was owned by Aaron J. Bishop, whose wife, Laura Carter-Bishop, and two children were in the house when the fire broke out.
Mr. Lacks said Ms. Carter-Bishop was cooking with oil on the stove when the fire started.
She grabbed the 4-year-old, the infant and the dog and got out of the house and went next door to call 911, Mr. Lacks said.
Mr. Bishop, who is a corrections officer, was at work when the fire broke out.
Mr. Lacks said the crews fought the fire for about three hours.
The house was insured and the family will be staying with family members for now, according to Mr. Lacks.
