Motorists charged with DWI, related offenses

The following motorists are charged with driving while intoxicated and related offenses:

n Andrew J. Burwell, 28, of Hermon, was charged by Potsdam village police early Saturday. He also was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlicensed operation and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police said Mr. Burwell was stopped on May Road in Potsdam for inadequate brake lights. His blood alcohol content was listed as 0.11 percent. Under state law, a BAC of 0.08 percent or higher constitutes proof of intoxication.

n Jeffrey J. Kendall, 33, of DePeyster, also was charged by state police with aggravated unlicensed operation early Sunday.

Police said they witnessed Mr. Kendall pulling into a yard at 5648 County Route 6, Oswegatchie, where he did not live, at 2:30 a.m. His BAC was 0.14 percent, police said.

n Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies charged John R. Johnston, 47, of 16080 Hamp Road, with aggravated DWI and traffic infractions after an accident Saturday night on Washington Street. Mr. Johnston admitted to having “a few” whiskies at a bar before driving home, deputies said.

He was taken to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and issued a breath test, which determined his BAC to be 0.24 percent, they said. Aggravated DWI is charged when the BAC is 0.18 percent or higher.

He also was charged with unsafe lane change.
