POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central varsity girls lacrosse team got a rebuilding season off to a promising start on Tuesday, steadily pulling away to a 16-0 NAC win over Saranac Lake at the SUNY Potsdam turf.

“We’re a young team and we’re going to need our younger players to step up this season,” said coach Sarah Bullard. “I was a little surprised with how well things went today. It’s definitely a good start for us.”

Senior Annette Rishe anchored a balanced Lady Sandstoner offense with six goals and one assist. Classmate Kiona Loran, who hadn’t played the past two seasons, made an encouraging return in notching four goals and two assists as Potsdam surged to an 11-0 lead by halftime. Freshman Matisyn Beamer netted a pair of goals while sophomore Paige McCabe fashioned a goal and two assists. Seniors Haley Clark and Abby Gruneisen and sophomore Kalie Grant closed out the Lady Sandstoner scoresheet with solo goals.

Junior Katelyn Bloom handled three shots backstopping the shutout.

Analina Cecunjun made six saves in the losing cause.

The Lady Sandstoners feature one other returning senior, Ashley Anderson, along with a pair of juniors, Allie Compeau and Courtney DiTullio. The lone other sophomore is Abby Thomas. A strong freshmen contingent also includes Leah Cruikshank, Ashlee Marsh and Bridget Owney. Eighth-graders Hannah Drechsel and Ali McFadden are also expected to make an impact.

The Lady Sandstoners return to action on Friday against Heuvelton Central at the SUNY Potsdam field starting at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs upended Potsdam in the first round of the Section 10 playoffs last spring.
