MASSENA - A Massena woman was charged with two felony counts Friday alleging she stole nearly $3,500 from the Massena Grange, where she had served as the organization’s treasurer.

Village police charged Wendy J. Vice, 45, of 597 County Route 40, Massena, with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree forgery. She was arraigned by Acting Massena Village Justice James M. Crandall and released under the supervision of the probation department.

The charges were lodged two days after Vice was sentenced for stealing $18,000 from the Highland Nursing Home, where she was employed in the business office at the time of that crime.

Massena Village Police Investigator Jason Olson said the theft from the Massena Grange accounts took place at the same as she was stealing money from her employer.

“This isn’t something that just happened,” he said.

Vice, in a statement she signed for village police, admitted she had taken money from the Massena Grange account.

“I used the money to gamble at the (Akwesasne) Mohawk Casino. I have since been attending GA Meetings and have had successful recovery. I am sorry for my actions and regret my actions in the past,” she noted in her statement to police.

Betty L. Starks, master of the Massena Grange, noted in an August 2013 statement that numerous discrepancies had been discovered in the organization’s checking account.

She said her name had been forged on checks cashed for $500 on Jan. 11, 2012, $200 on Jan. 19, 2012, $500 on June 26, 2012, $719.10 on July 16, 2012, $144 on July 16, 2012, another $144 on July 16, 2012 and $400 on Aug. 25, 2012.

Ms. Starks also alleged Vice had completed cash withdrawals for $305 on Dec. 6, 2011, $617.50 on May 4, 2012 and $50 on June 11, 2012 for invalid reasons.
