POTSDAM - Richard F. Wessel Jr., MD, FACC, board-certified cardiologist, has joined the medical staff of Canton-Potsdam Hospital andhas started seeing patients in the CPH cardiology practice in the Helen Snell Cheel Medical Campus, 49 Lawrence Ave., Potsdam, NY.
Dr. Wessels practice encompasses all aspects of general cardiology, and he has experience with all aspects of nuclear cardiology. Dr. Wessel plans to perform transesophogeal echocardiograms, standard echocardiogram, stress testing, stress echo, elective cardioversion, temporary pacemaker insertion and nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Wessel will work closely with a cardiovascular surgeon to resolve a patients condition that might require surgery, such as valvular heart disease or the need for a pacemaker.
Dr. Wessel will also manage all of the patients follow up care including cardiac rehabilitation and medications. Dr. Wessel consults with surgeons and anesthesiologists who need their patients cardiac condition evaluated to ensure the patients heart is strong enough to undergo a procedure or operation. His practice is anticipated to be 50 percent inpatient care and 50 percent out-patient care. He sees patients in the hospital to perform procedures that cannot be done in office, and for consultations.
Dr. Wessel received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Va., and completed his internship and residency in the Brown University Program in Internal Medicine at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, R.I. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cardiology in the Department of Cardiology at the University of Connecticut, Farmington, CT.
Dr. Wessel is certified by the American Board of Cardiology, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a Member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, American College of Physicians, American Society of Echocardiography, and the North Carolina Medical Society. He comes to Potsdam from practice with the Eastern Carolina Cardiovascular group in Elizabeth City, NC.
