POTSDAM - The Massena Central varsity boys lacrosse team got the 2014 NAC season off to an impressive start at Potsdam Centrals expense on Thursday at the SUNY Potsdam turf field.
The visting Raiders jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on goals by Cole Allen, Brendan Broderick and Jordan Robert before the Sandstoners got on the board when Josh Sanchez broke through for the first of his two goals. Massena countered by generating nine of the next 10 goals in building a commanding 12-2 halftime lead before adding three unanswered goals after the break.
Rhoades Tarbell anchored the winning offense with three goals and two assists. Sako Rourke fashioned three goals and one helper. Cole finished with a pair of goals along with Kendrick Angus (1 assist) while Ross Driscoll (1 assist), Hunter Pyke (1 assist) and Ross Davis connected for the other goals.
Tyler Armstrong turned aside 17 shots through the first three goals working the Massena crease for the win., Troi Benedict came on to record two saves over the course of the final frame. Chase Palmer went the distance between the pipes for Potsdam (0-2) and logged eight stops.
The Raiders (1-0) are slated to host Salmon River on Monday while the Sandstoners are schedules to play at OFA next Tuesday. Both games face-off at 4:30 p.m.
In the other boys lacrosse action on Thursday, Canton downed OFA 17-2 while Saranac Lake at Colton-Pierrepont and Salmon River at St. Lawrence Central were postponed.
Canton 17, OFA 2: At SUNY Canton, the Golden Bears jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter then outscored the Blue Devils 6-0 in the second half en route to pulling away to the convincing win in the season debut for both squads.
Payton VanBibber led the Canton attack with five goals and two assists. Josh Huiatt and Jake Facey (1 assist) added three goals apiece while Nate Gibson made five saves backstopping the win.
David Prudhomme and Nate Peo netted the OFA goals while Quinton Denner handled 14 of the shots he faced making his varsity goaltending debut.
