Hatch scores twice as Union advances in NCAA tourney

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Massena native Matt Hatch andMax Novakscored two goals each to lead top-ranked Union College to a 5-2 victory over the University of Vermont in an NCAA East Regional Semifinal Game at Webster Bank Arena Friday afternoon.

The Dutchmen, 29-6-4, are undefeated in the last 14 games (13-0-1). Union will play Providence at 3 p.m. today in the NCAA East Regional Final.

Union oushot Vermont, 39-25. Brody Hoffman made 34 saves for the Catamounts and Colin Stevens stopped 23 for the Dutchmen.

The Catamounts had the first power play of the day at 3:27 of the opening period.Hatch took the puck from inside his zone and was one-on-one with a Catamount all the way down the ice.

He came in from the right close and tucked in the puck inside the left post for a 1-0 Union lead. It was the 11th goal of the season for the senior and the fourth shorthanded goal for the Dutchmen.

Hatch also sealed the victory with an open net goal late in the contest. The Catamounts pulled the goalie in the final minutes and after a Mike Paliotta shot from the point was stopped by Stevens, Hatch got the puck near center ice and a defender fell, leaving Hatch skating in alone to fire the puck into the empty net.
