ALEXANDRIA BAY A 17-year-old foreign exchange student went missing this weekend during a trip to Destiny USA in Syracuse, according to Syracuse city police.
Alexandria Central School District Superintendent Kyle L. Faulkner said the student, identified by Syracuse police Sgt. Thomas Connellan as Mena Rezkalla, disappeared during a trip to the mall Saturday. Mr. Faulkner said the trip was with a group, but was not a school function. The authorities have been contacted, he said.
Mr. Faulkner said the Egyptian student was part of the Center for Cultural Interchange Greenheart exchange program. The Chicago-based organization has been notified, he said, and Mr. Rezkallas national embassy and local police are working to locate him.
Were hoping they find him soon, Mr. Faulkner said.
The student was last seen at about 11 a.m. Saturday, when he left the group on his own accord, Sgt. Connellan said.
It doesnt look like anything suspicious, he said.
State police in Watertown said they received a call about the case at about 5 p.m. Monday and are investigating the matter. At about 6:15 p.m., state police were sending a unit to the students host familys residence on County Route 1 in Redwood, about seven miles from the village of Alexandria Bay. The identity of the host family was not released, but it appears the mother of his host family was with him at the mall, Sgt. Connellan said.
Calls to CCI Greenheart were not immediately returned.
