NORFOLK – Mr. Floyd R. Grant, 94, of 51 Lacomb Road, peacefully passed away Sunday afternoon, March 30, 2014 at his home while under the loving care of family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Floyd was born March 3, 1920 on the family farm in Norfolk, son of the late Lester M. and June Farnsworth Grant. He first attended the Grantville School before graduating from Norfolk High School in 1939. On February 13, 1941, he entered the US Army Air Force. On Valentines Day 1942, while stationed at Kirkland Air Force Base, he met the love of his life, Helen Claire Greeson. They were married on September 17, 1942 at the First Methodist Church in Albequerque, New Mexico with Rev. Brown, officiating. After their marriage, Floyd was deployed to the South Pacific with the 13th Air Force Unit and earned the Bronze Star. Upon returning to the United States and his discharge from the military on August 30, 1945, Floyd and Helen returned to Norfolk where they built and lived in their current home on the Lacomb Road. Helen predeceased him on June 23, 2004.
Floyd was a security guard at Alcoa for 32 years retiring in 1981 and was a member of their 25-Year Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #79; the Earl J. Santimaw VFW Post #1143; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1701 as a life member; and a former member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #513, all of Massena. Floyd was an avid gardener and truly enjoyed spending time woodworking and fishing. He and his late wife enjoyed traveling, having traveled to every state except Hawaii and visited the countries of France, Germany, and England. After Helen died, he enjoyed a trip to Australia.
Floyd is survived by his daughters, Linda Grant Simonds of Norfolk; Nancy Grant Mattice and husband Patrick of Bloomington, IN; Annita Greeson Grant of Norfolk; his grandson, Brett Allen Regis and wife Vicky of Virginia; two granddaughters, Amy Grant Mattice Witte and her husband, David of Bloominton, Indiana; and Keetah Simonds-Brady and wife Brandy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Five great grandchildren, Conner Grant Hagan; Benjamin Patrick Witte; Brayden Allen Regis; Evan William Witte; Ava Helen Witte, his sister, Thelma Fedonick of Norfolk; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Floyd was predeceased by two brothers, Karl L. Grant on October 17, 1988 and Orville G. Grant on September 29, 1991.
A celebration of Floyds life will be held Friday 2- 4:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. The members the American Legion and VFW will conduct a memorial service at 3:30 PM and the members of the Elks Lodge will conduct a memorial ritual at 3:45 PM.
