MASSENA - The Massena Village Board accepted the retirement of Ptl. Edward J. Clary from its police force, effective May 31, and gave the villages police chief permission to fill the vacancy created by that move.
(He served) for about 26 years but he left for a short period and went to the sheriffs department. So (he was) with us for a little over 20, Massena Village Police Chief Timmy J. Currier said.
Hes done a good job for the department. He certainly is going to be missed, and we wish him well. So thank you Ed Clary for your service to the village of Massena, Mayor James F. Hidy added.
The board then granted Mr. Currier permission to canvass and begin interviewing candidates for the post.
Chief, you probably want to address this, but right now we would be, if Im not mistaken, minus two officers and that puts us in a precarious situation due to the manning clause and such, Mr. Hidy said.
The villages police chief said that was the case. I sent you the impact of overtime for the vacancy on March 18. So with two people vacant, the overtime costs would be about $175,000 for both of those positions. Its hard to equate the two-person shortage because we just cant impact how that would affect the night shift where we reduced overtime in the last contract because we dont have enough data since weve only been working under this new schedule for about a year. So its hard to put a firm number if that would increase or not, Mr. Currier said.
In addition to Mr. Clarys impending retirement, village police also have one patrolman out on a long-term disability leave.
