Massena Nursery School holding KidFest fundraiser on Saturday

MASSENA - The Massena Nursery will help folks get rid of the winter blues with their luau theme during this year’s KidFest fundraiser.

The event, the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Massena Nursery School, runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at J.W. Leary Junior High School, Massena.

“It’s luau-themed,” board President Renee Barto said, noting the first 100 children will receive a free lei.

Admission is free, but tickets are needed for the games and attractions. Anyone who brings a canned food item will receive two free tickets.

And there will be plenty to keep visitors busy, according to Ms. Barto.

“Basically it’s an indoor carnival. We’ll have two bounce houses. We’re going to have a project table for arts and crafts. We have games we made up,” such a “Ducky Ping Pong,” “Crocodile Croquet,” “Baseball Toss” and “Feed the Penguins,” she said.

There will also be face painting, as well a special show from Belly Buttons the Clown at 1:30 p.m.

Besides serving as a fundraiser, KidFest is also an opportunity for parents to register their children for the Massena Nursery School’s 2014-15 school year. The school has a program for 3-year-olds and a 4-year-old pre-kindergarten program.

KidFest always draws a good crowd to enjoy the festivities and support the school in the process, Ms. Barto said.

“We usually get 200 to 300 kids,” she said.

This year’s event, the 12th time they’ve staged the KidFest fundraiser, was buoyed by a donation from Stewart’s, which provided $200 as part of their Holiday Match program.

“There’s an application process. They give out money to different organizations around the area. They gave us $200. We used their money to buy raffles for our silent auction,” Ms. Barto said.

Among the prizes they bought was a Corvette Power Wheels that will be going home with a lucky winner, she said.
