Heuvelton, Canton victorious in girls lacrosse


Canton and Heuvelton both generated some intense offensive heat in extremely cold conditions in Saturday’s Northern Conference Girls Lacrosse action.

The Golden Bears climbed to 2-0 with a 15-9 win over Salmon River (0-2) while Heuvelton (1-1) bested Saranac Lake 16-1.

The Bears and Bulldogs will meet on Tuesday in a 3:30 p.m. start at SUNY Canton.

Meanwhile, in NAC Boys Lacrosse Section 10 champion Salmon River rolled past Massena 9-1.

Canton 15 - Salmon River 9: “It has been a tough season with all of our practices inside the in the gym but our seniors have done a good job pulling things together and we did a nice job in transitions and finishing on the attack,” said Coach Melanie Knight.

“I really want to thank SUNY Canton for making the arrangements for our team and our boys teams to play our games there.”

Lacey Kenny scored four goals and Claire Bartlett and Tess Knight each netted three goals for the Lady Bears who also received two goals from Rachael Huntley.

Angelina Vecchio, Emily Pinckney and Cyrena Cline all added single tallies in support of Meg Howard’s 12 saves.

Chrissy Benedict and Kyra Thompson each scored three goals for Salmon River and Kiana Thompson, Jaiden Mitchell and Tsiotenhariio Herne all produced singles. Raylynn Sunday handled 10 shots in the Shamrocks’ goal.

Heuvelton 16 - Saranac Lake 1: The best offense is a quick start.

Heuvelton displayed a quick striking offense against Saranac Lake on Saturday at SUNY Potsdam scoring in the first minute enroute to 5-0 lead just six minutes into the game and eventually a 16-1 decision.

Jackie Sovie delivered nine goals and Heather Thompson was called upon to make one save in the win for the 1-1 Bulldogs.

Olivia St. Pierre tallied four goals and Kylie Piercey, Maddie St. Pierre and Renee Breault each scored once in the win.


Salmon River 9, Massena 1: At SUNY Potsdam, four answered second half goals sealed the 9-1 win for the Shamrocks in their season opener. Trenton Tarbell generated three goals and Kyle Lewis produced four assists leading Salmon River which led 5-1 at halftime.

Skye Sunday and Kason Tarbell each logged two goals and Russ Oakes and Dalton Roundpoint both produced a solo goal as Karonhiate Lazore and Bryton Burns each chipped in an assist. Tazz Oakes made eight saves in net.

Sako Rourke scored for Massena and Tyler Armstrong had 16 saves for the Raiders.
