COLTON - Colton-Pierrepont’s Whiz Quiz/Academic team is having a busy and successful year.

This past fall seniors Andrew Jenkins, Noah Whalen, Kieran Perry and junior Eve Whalen competed in the local Whiz Quiz tournament televised by WPBS in Watertown. They finished in second place by defeating teams from Madrid-Waddington, Sackets Harbor, Lafargeville and Hermon-Dekalb before being losing in the championship round to the team from Carthage.

In December, CPCS went to the Pre-Holiday Academic Tournament at South Burlington High School in Burlington, Vt., a tournament put on by the Vermont-NEA Scholars Bowl. This event is a qualifier for national tournament competition through NAQT, the National Association of Quiz Tournaments.

They finished 20th out of 42 teams overall, against schools that were much larger than Colton-Pierrepont. However, in the category of small schools (enrollments of 500 students or less in grades 10-12), the team finished fifth out of 25 schools.

Mr. Jenkins, who has been on the Whiz Quiz team since he was a freshman, was ranked 13th out of the 266 students competing for amount of points scored.

The team’s ranking in the small schools category qualified them for a wild card spot in the 2014 NAQT Small Schools National Championship Tournament, which will be held at the Minneapolis Hilton in Minneapolis, Minn. Because of their success, the CPCS school board and administration granted the team permission to attend the tournament and are covering the tournament entry fee and cost of accommodations. Andrew, Noah, Kieran, alternate Sabrina Johnson, and advisors Mark Lee and Donna McGinnis will be heading to Minneapolis May 2 – 4 to compete against a field of 47 other teams from all over the country. The team is using the prize money from their second place finish in Whiz Quiz toward the airfare to Minneapolis and are currently seeking donations to help pay for the rest.

If you would like to donate, it can be done online through a website set up by team member Noah Whalen, http://www.gofundme.com/6mn7ic , or by sending donations to CPCS Whiz Quiz team, Attn: Donna McGinnis, Colton-Pierrepont Central School, 4921 SH 56, Colton, NY 13625.
