TWO INJURED - WINTHROP - Two people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Friday evening on state Route 420 at the Mahoney Road.

Massena-based state police said Matthew A. Whitehead, 18, of 27 Buck Road, Winthrop, was eastbound on the Mahoney Road when his brakes reportedly failed when he attempted to stop at the stop sign at state Route 420, failed and entered the intersection.

His vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a southbound vehicle being operated by Christina D. Gilbo, 46, of 1204 Old Potsdam-Parishville Road, Parishville. Troopers said the force of the collision drove Whitehead’s vehicle into a snowbank and then airborne, striking the stop sign and a street sign before overturning and coming to rest at the bottom of an embankment.

Whitehead was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital by Tri-Town Rescue for treatment of a reported concussion. Gilbo was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital by Tri-Town Rescue for treatment of complaints of bruising. Brasher-Winthrop Fire also responded to the accident scene.
