POTSDAM- Rita L. Bennett, 78, formerly of 803 Mayfield Dr., passed away Saturday April 5, 2014 at the Canton Potsdam Hospital, where she had been a patient since March 31st. She had been in failing health for the past year.

Rita was born on October 2, 1935, in Mooers Forks, NY on the family farm, daughter of the late Benjamin and Ida Barcomb LaFountain. She attended school in Mooers Forks and graduated from Massena High School. In 1964 she married Joseph A. Bennett at St. Raymond’s Church, Raymondville, NY. He predeceased her on May 9, 2005.

Rita worked at Alcoa for 13 years as a Keypunch Operator, then at Jefferson Elementary School for several years, before working at the P&C in Massena in the deli department, retiring from there in 2003.

Rita enjoyed working, and socializing with her many friends. She loved her cats, reading, and playing Bingo. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of St. Joseph’s Church in Massena.

She is survived by her son John Bennett, Potsdam; her sisters, Theresa & Robert Vice, Potsdam, and Loretta LaFountain, Peru, NY; and sisters-in-law Theresa LaFountain and Thelma LaFountain, both of Plattsburg, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Rita was predeceased by her daughter Shelley A. Bennett, on August 10, 1983; four brothers, Alfred, Ken, Wilfred and Lawrence LaFountain; and one sister, Millie LaFountain.

As per her wishes, there will be no calling hours, a memorial Mass will be held at the Church of the Visitation, Norfolk, NY on Friday, April 12, at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Jack Downs officiating. Interment will be later this spring at the Visitation Cemetery in Norfolk.

Memorial contribution may be made in her memory to CPH Foundation Fund, or to United Helpers Maplewood Campus Bereavement Fund.
