MASSENA - Team representatives not showing up for Relay for Life planning meetings are hindering planning for the June 6-7 event, according to the chairperson for the annual Relay for Life Massena/Louisville.

“The problem we are having is teams are not being represented at our team captains meetings. If teams do not show up, we will not have activities for the late night, early morning hours. We would like to get these activities planned so we can list them in the program,” Denise M. Furnace said.

The Relay for Life is scheduled for 6 p.m. June 6 to 6 a.m. June 7 at the Louisville Community Center. While there’s still two months until the event, Ms. Furnace said planning is in full swing, and they need assistance from all of the participating teams.

“Relay for Life is not just the Planning Committee’s event; it is all the team’s event, too. Relay for Life Massena/Louisville Committee is asking the teams to help with the planning and putting on the activities this year,” she said.

Ms. Furnace said the Planning Committee will provide entertainment during the beginning hours of Relay for Life.

“We would like to see different teams pick an hour some time during the latter part of the relay and have an activity,” she said.

She said, for instance, that maurices 1455 Nikita’s Dream team is planning to have a “bra pong” tournament.

“Other activities could be another Zumba demonstration, yoga, line dancing, singing, a play, more games,” Ms. Furnace said. “The DJ Chase the Light Productions is willing to help the teams with their events or activities. Our hope is by getting the teams more involved in the actual planning of events, we will have more people staying for the entire 12 hours, which is the true meaning behind relay - ‘Cancer does not take a break, so neither should we.’”

The next team meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 29 at the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce, 16 Church St., with the committee meeting starting at 6 p.m.

“Any team member is welcome to attend the team meeting,” Ms. Furnace said.

She said 14 teams with 37 participants are registered so far for the event, and others are welcome to register on-line at relayforlife.org/massenany.

“If a team is not able to register on-line, please come to a team meeting and our on-line chairperson, Emily Fiske, will help you. One of the reasons for getting registered early is so our American Cancer Society staff representative can get the correct size of T-shirt ordered for participants,” she said.

Team captains will get a special shirt this year. Anyone who wants to see the design can view it at a team meeting or on the Massena/Louisville Relay For Life Facebook page.

As the Relay for Life gets closer, some teams are continuing to hold fundraising events.

Comma’s for a Cure will be holding a spaghetti dinner from 4-6:30 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Congregational Church, 39 W. Orvis St., Massena. The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, garlic and regular bread, dessert and beverage. The cost is $7 per person, with children 5 and under free.

maurices Nikita’s Dream will be holding a bake sale April 19 in front of maurices at the St. Lawrence Centre mall, and Team Cancer Crushers will be holding a bottle drive in the near future.

The second annual Adult Prom, a fundraiser by Team No Regret, is scheduled for May 31 at the Knights of Columbus in Massena. The cost is $25 per person and includes a meal. Call 250-3356 for tickets.

maurices Nikita’s Dream is also planning a crafter/vendors market, depending on the weather, June 6 during the Relay for Life. The cost is $10 with a $5 non-refundable deposit for any vendor or crafter who wishes to reserve a place in advance. The cost is $15 on the day of the event for those who wish to attend, but don’t want to commit ahead of time. Contact Ms. Furnace at 769-7186 or dmfurnace60@gmail.com or Emily at 250-0607 or em_fiske@yahoo.com for information.

Anyone who wants to do their part to fight cancer can become an event sponsor like Canton-Potsdam Hospital, make a donation to any team, attend a fundraising event or volunteer like the Planning Committee members and Alcoa workers who help with set-up on the day of the event.
