Potsdam students coming together to host Walk/Run for Addie

POTSDAM - A group of students in Heather Cowen-Wilson’s health class at Potsdam High School are using the opportunity given to them by an assignment to help raise money for Addison “Addie” Green.

Addie is a five-year-old Lawrence Avenue Elemenary kindegarten student currently being treated for a rare form of cancer.

“We decided to do this a couple months ago when we first heard about Addie,”according to Katherine Blanchard, a sophomore in the class, who is working with a group of seven other students to organize and put on the event.

“We’re supposed to be doing a project to help promote physical fitness,” she said, adding that organizing an event has turned out to be more work than they originally thought.

“There are a lot of little things to do,” she said, adding they had 10 minutes in class on Friday to work on the project before spring break.

When asked if the group had set a goal, Ms. Blanchard said that is something they haven’t yet done.

“We were talking about setting a goal, but then we realized we needed a cash box, so we started talking about that and other things,” she said. “We’re kind of scrambling now at the last minute to make sure we’re not missing anything.”

While the walk may be just two weeks away, Ms. Blanchard explained Friday was the last day of school before spring break.

“Next week is spring break, then the walk is here,” she said.

The 5K Walk/Run for Addie will be held on April 26 at Potsdam High School. Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. with the walk taking place on “Stevie’s Trail.”

The trail starts at the turf field and goes up by the elementary and middle school before looping back around to the high school and is approximately one-mile in length.

“The 5K will be three laps around the trail,” Ms. Blanchard said.

Pre-registration for the event is $5 payable on the day of the walk. For people registering that day, the entry fee will be $7.
