MALONE - Malone-based state police are investigating what they describe as a “bold” multiple-building break-in and burglary at the Constable Town Offices and Tony’s Bar on the evening of April 6.

State police Investigator David Hart said the still-unidentified suspect or suspects also unsuccessfully attempted to break into Tallon’s General Store some time that evening after 6:30 p.m. All three buildings are just yards apart in the most populated area of the tiny town.

“This was a bold act, given this is the town offices, and there could have been some kind of alarm system,” Mr. Hart said. The town offices and the bar did not have alarms, and the alleged thieves were able to enter using a “prying tool” to get in through the town justice office, he added. The lock has since been replaced.

The perpetrators got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from the bar, but didn’t find much to steal in the town offices. Constable Town Supervisor Richard Onufer said court files, blank check books and other items were found strewn throughout the building, including the town justice office, the town hall and the adult center. Close to $20 in cash was taken from the adult center fund box, but no electronics or other items were taken.

“They were looking for anything of value, not for something in particular,” Mr. Hart said.

Mr. Hart said he continues to follow up leads and hopes to make an arrest or arrests before the culprits can strike again.

“Somebody bold enough to break into these buildings may very well break in somewhere else,” he added.

Anyone with information related to the break-ins may call Hart at 518-483-5000.
