MASSENA - A fundraiser is underway to help equip elementary art classrooms in Massena.

Patricia Murphy, an art teacher at Nightengale and Madison elementary schools, said they’re in the middle of their Square 1 Arts fundraiser, which raises money for art room gear. It’s the third year they’ve done the fundraiser, in which individuals can purchase items emblazoned with a student’s artwork and the school receives a percentage of the profits.

“Square 1 Arts is our annual fundraiser for the elementary art classroom and for Nightengale and Madison’s parent teachers organizations. In the past two years, we have purchased many new items for the art room,” she said.

They include a teacher paper cutter, early primary grade smocks, student aprons, scissors, paint brushes, painting drying racks, rolling carts for storage and student folders, student artwork pressboard frames, storage/carrying totes and class portfolios.

And it’s all done through a fundraising program that allows individuals to buy a product with a student’s artwork displayed on it.

They include everything from magnets to memo boards, mugs to pendant necklaces, and travel mugs to water bottles.

“There are many new products this year, including iPod, iPad, Galaxy III and iPhone covers, just to name a few,” Ms. Murphy said.

Students created artwork that was submitted to Square 1 Art. It was done on art paper provided in a toolbox shipped to the schools. Once the art was finished, it was labeled and organized by class and sent to Square 1 Art to begin the placement process on products.

Ms. Murphy said it’s an opportunity parents to buy a product “with your child’s beautiful artwork proudly displayed on it,” while helping the art department at the same time.

“The students worked very hard this year,” she said.

Ms. Murphy said students will receive 20 free stickers containing their artwork and their own custom catalog that will arrive April 24 or 25.

“The catalog has a very important ‘student code’ printed by your child’s name. Please use this code for all on-line orders,” she said.

The deadline for orders is May 2, and they will be tax-free and shipped free or charge. Orders made after the deadline will be subject to tax and shipping costs.

Ordering can be done on-line or by using the paper order form attached to the student catalog. Payments accompanying paper order forms should be made in cash or a check made payable to Square 1 Arts. Ms. Murphy said those orders can be sent in an envelope to the school’s main office, where a box marked “Square 1” will be located.

The delivery date for all orders is May 29 or 30.

“Just in time for Father’s Day,” Ms. Murphy said.

Square 1 Art was founded in 2000 by Martha and Andrew Reid. Their children, Travis and Jane Reid, are also part of the organizational leadership team for the company, which bills itself on its website as the nationwide leader in art fundraising.
