WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman William Owens is calling on the US Department of Agriculture to provide any appropriate assistance to north country counties affected by recent flooding. A USDA disaster declaration would make low-interest emergency loans available to affected farmers.
Agriculture plays a critical role in the north country economy, Mr. Owens said. I urge USDA to work closely with New York state to ensure that all appropriate resources are made available to the farmers in our region. As with past disasters, it is critical that we all work together to help our farmers rebuild their damaged property, recover their losses, and get back to work.
High water levels combined with additional heavy precipitation and snow melt have led to severe flooding, especially around rivers and creeks. Infrastructure and property have been affected, including damage to farm equipment, displacement of cattle and the loss of feed stocks. Locations in and around Essex, Franklin, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties have seen moderate to severe flooding in recent weeks.
