COLTON - The Colton-Pierrepont Central School District has been giving their college bound seniors the chance to qualify for various scholarships through the Dollars For Scholars program for 17 years.

According to the nonprofit foundation’s website, the service helps students by “raising scholarship funds, establishing endowments, providing assistance with college readiness and the financial aid process and distributing scholarships.” .

CPCS had its first Dollars for Scholars phone-a-thon in 1998 and held their most recent fundraiser last week.

“Preliminary donations from the phone-a-thon were around $800. We’re optimistic that giving donors the chance to pledge online will help boost donations,” DFS committee member Lianne Knight said.

The committee is comprised of Colton-Pierrepont community members and in previous years they have been able to award up to $4,000 in scholarships to students.

A new aspect of the phone-a-thon this year was the ability for donors to pledge money online. Donors may contribute money by visiting colton-pierrepont.dollarsforscholars.org or by mailing to 4921 State Highway 56 in Colton.

“The committee meets in June to review the applications. We have set criteria that we follow to see if students can be awarded the scholarship,” Ms. Knight said.

This year student volunteers helped out with the phone-a-thon for the first time.

Ms. Knight pointed out that the committee is still actively seeking donations and will be doing so until the end of May.
